Meet our new illustrator...

Our lovely new illustrator Jade has recently joined the Paper & Cloth team (hooray!), so we thought we'd ask her a few questions and get to know her a little better...

Hi Jade! We're so excited to have you join the team! Can you tell us a little bit about where you gather your inspiration from?

I take inspiration from most things, especially when out and about or travelling, looking at different colour combos and patterns. I'm a big fan of Pinterest and Instagram; they're a great way to come across illustrators I've never heard of before and it's so useful and quick when collecting images to form research. There's also a few go-to blogs I always look at: Print & Pattern is great to see what's on the high street at the moment, and I always look at Oh So Beautiful Paper. They mainly blog about stationery but show lots of lovely illustration!

And how does your working process usually start?

I always start by sketching, these can be rough but they're just for me to work out the layout of an illustration, or just to quickly show an idea so I don't forget it! My line drawings are always created in separate elements with a fine liner and then scanned into the Mac piece by piece. If I know I'm going to work digitally, then a lot of my development work will be on the Mac, changing layout slightly or colour palettes as I go. I love seeing drawings come to life by adding colour or layering up drawn elements.

What design tools can't you live without?

Pens - I usually use black brush tip pens or 0.005 - 0.1 fine liners, the finer the better!

A drawing board - I didn't now the train that looking down whilst drawing had caused until I got a drawing board, I couldn't go without it now. I definitely recommend one if you hand draw a lot.

Drawing tablet - I just can't seem to get the hang of drawing nice detailed lifework on my Mac with a mouse, I don't think I've got the co-ordintaion for it, so it's rare that I'm not using a tablet when I'm working digitally.

Who are your illustration heroes?

I've got so many favourite illustrators who I reference for my work, but when I was younger it was always the Beatrix Potter books that actually made me want to draw all the time, so I suppose I can say that she is the reason I chose a career in illustration. I also love Marthe Armitage's patterns, they are all hand drawn and based on nature, with most having just one or two colours within them.

Who would be your dream client?

I love seeing my work anywhere really, but it would be great to see my work in Anthropologie.

What are you currently reading?

I always forget to make time to read, but I like to catch up with The Simple Thing magazine - they always dedicate full pages to illustrators, so they're nice to keep and look back at. I also like 91 magazine, it's more interiors and styling and you can get a digital version.

What is your favourite piece of artwork you have on display at home?

We recently bought a large Biologica wall chart featuring vintage studies of bugs and insects. I don't usually like creepy crawlies but I love old botanical illustrations and this was the perfect size to put on that awkward wall above the staircase, plus it's a bit of a surprise to guests walking down the stairs.

What are your fave things outside of work?

Being outdoors, especially with our dog Eddie. It's nice to get away from the computer at the weekends, even if it's raining. I love travelling too, I love a good holiday, even if it's just for a couple of days. I try to vary the kind of trips I take, but I love anything from a beach to a trek! Doing up my house is also on my list, it sounds a bit boring but I love anything to do with interiors and I love being at home so I'll take any chance to decorate or do something to the garden.

Thanks Jade, we hope you'll love being on team P&C as much as we do!

Look out for more Q&A fun times with the rest of the gang in the coming weeks.
